Web Design Tips For Improving Your Google Search Results

In this article I will be covering how using the right web design techniques can drastically increase your Google search results. The most important word to keep in mind is: relativity. No, this is not Einstein’s theory… this refers to the idea of more “relative” content on your website, the better search results.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when putting together your website:

  1. Title- the 1st item of interest for Google crawlers is your title. The idea is to use at least 60 characters (72 max) that best describes your business. Use relative keywords and the location of your business along with limiting use of non-relative words.
  2. Using Meta Tags- use no more than 8 keywords relative to your business.
  3. Use h1, h2, h3 tags- the Google search algorithm determines if a <h1> tag is present… this must be the most important line of copy on your web page. Every web page should have at least one <h1> tag loaded with your keywords relative to the content on the page.
  4. Graphics and Images file names- how you name graphic/image files is very important. Google likes image files to be named according to the content that is being displayed. So if you have a image of President Obama… the file name should be president_obama.jpg. The win-win here is your image will be indexed (by Google) for both web and image search results.
  5. Use CSS and limit tables- Always use CSS. Google LOVES CSS driven website (less clutter for the crawlers). Some experts believe table-less websites are ideal, but its OK to use a few (no more than 3 max). I personally use at least one table.
  6. Links- name links according to your relative keywords. The pages they link to should reflect the keywords as well. If you have an link named About Us; Google does not recognized its uniqueness. So use About (insert name of your business here).
  7. Body Copy- load your body copy with your keywords. Be aware: do not overload and NEVER use “buy, sell, add to cart, purchase” or anything that indicates “selling”. Google HATES these keywords and will lower your search results.

After you have completed your website… I suggest running it through www.websitegrader.com. This website will give you a detail report on how you can improve marketability.
